As Executive Editor, I launched the Global News vertical, bringing my initial concept for contextual, women-first international storytelling to life in the form of a fully fledged news team, a first for Refinery29. I led a cross-departmental team of reporters, writers and editors in producing original stories for the more than 175 million women Refinery29 reaches across its site and platforms each month. I hired team members, instituted best practices, trained younger staff and built a global freelance network, collaborating closely with our sisters sites in the UK and Germany. The content I assigned, edited and wrote drove more than 1 million unique visits to the site each month.
In 2016, I was selected to lead the Politics vertical as well. I played a defining role in Refinery29's presidential election coverage through my on-the-ground reporting at both political conventions and Election Night programming.
As the head of the department, I set the news agenda on a daily and long-term basis, conceptualizing, assigning and editing everything from breaking daily news to long-term feature packages. In addition to managing the news department and focusing on strategy and growth, I continued to report original feature stories and host Facebook Live segments with high-profile guests and influencers.
The bespoke multimedia feature on young Syrian refugee women I wrote, Daughters of Paradise, was a nominated for multiple 2016 Webby Awards.
